INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

EasyBib

available through HCC Library. Allows users to build and export bibliographic information for works cited and reference pages. Requires HCC login and sign-up for additional elements.

Evernote

A free, cloud-based note-taking tool that allows users to clip passages, articles, and web pages and store them. Ideal for doing online research and collecting/organizing thoughts. Users can also take notes on what they have clipped and synced their notes online and between computers. Requires sign-up and download.

Dropbox

a file-syncing service that is also free and cloud-based. Has a large storage capacity. Ideal for accessing files between computers without having to have a portable hard drive or USB on hand. Users can share files with others, between computers, or online.

Google Docs 

(requires Google email address). Create, save, share and collaborate with documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Requires Google e-mail account.

Zotero

a free research tool that allows users to annotate online sources with "sticky notes", virtually highlight sources, bookmark them, and store them in one place. Useful for collecting links. Requires sign-up.

WRITING SOFTWARE AND APPS

Open Office   (Links to an external site.)

free, open-source office software for Mac and PC. Compatible with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel and the Apple suite of office tools. Files can be saved in a variety of formats besides the .otd default. Files can be uploaded to Canvas, but Turnitin doesn't always check them. It is advisable to have students using Open Office to save their files as Word 2000 files. Requires download.

"A Writer's Toolkit: A Handbook"  (Links to an external site.)  

free add-on for MSWord (2007/2010--PC Only) from 11Trees.com. Tool can be downloaded to copy of MS Word and removed at any time. In addition to containing explanation of various writing ideas (audience, argument, style, etc), the Writer's Toolkit can be used to do searches in Google Scholar right from MSWord and to find help with grammar and mechanics. As of now the software is free, but the company may change that in the future. Requires download.
