Canvas Using the Correct Browser

Browsers are just as important as your devices when it comes to Canvas. You will need to know which browsers Canvas supports, how to update them, and the requirements for some features that Canvas supports.

Supported Browsers

Canvas supports the current and first previous major releases of the following browsers:

Edge 88 and 89
Safari 13 and 14 (Macintosh only)
Chrome 88 and 89
Firefox 85 and 86 (Extended Releases are not supported)
Respondus Lockdown Browser (supporting the latest system requirements)

Canvas continually updates their supported browsers and the versions that they recommend are in this Canvas Guides article.

We highly recommend updating to the most current version of your preferred browser. Your browser will notify you if there is a new version available.

You can also use WhatIsMyBrowser.com to know what browser you are using and if it is up-to-date.

Internet Explorer is no longer supported by Canvas.

Some supported browsers may still produce a banner stating Your browser does not meet the minimum requirements for Canvas. If you have upgraded your browser, but you are still seeing the warning banner, try logging out of Canvas and deleting your browser cookies.

If your browser does not update automatically, you can download your preferred browser in the browser's download page:

Respondus Lockdown Browser
- If you have previously downloaded Respondus Lockdown Browser to take the MATH Placement Test, you'll need to uninstall that browser and install the link provided by your instructor in a quiz. You only need to download the link once.

Installing Respondus Lockdown Browser

To install LockDown browser, do the following steps:

In your course, click Quizzes to go the course's quiz section.
Find the quiz that requires LockDown Browser. In there, click Take The Quiz.
Click on the link provided. This will redirect you to the Respondus LockDown Browser download page.
Click Install Now to download LockDown Browser.
Follow the installation steps. After installing LockDown Browser, it can now be used to take any quiz that requires LockDown Browser and/or Respondus Monitor.

Required Components

The Java plug-in is required for screen sharing in Conferences. Please note that some browsers do not support Java. Otherwise, there are no other browser plug-ins used by Canvas.

JavaScript must be enabled to run Canvas.
